Case Study: Wellbeing workshop
A wellbeing day for frontline workers
The problem
The criminal justice system relies on a network of dedicated public sector staff, requiring them all to work effectively together to deliver these vital services. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and increasing pressure on public services mean that teams have struggled to build and maintain the real connection and understanding between different individuals and their roles, which is necessary for effective collaboration to keep our services running well.
Our solution
Telescope designed and led a full day of workshops for the Strategic Support, Administration & Assurance directorate within HMPPS Wales. Bringing together over 60 participants from different frontline and back office roles across the directorate, from junior staff to senior management, the main focus of the day was to build and strengthen relationships between colleagues. With a series of exercises to practice active listening, challenge beliefs and unlock the imagination, participants explored the concept of wellbeing at a personal, team and organisational level. The day ended with a fun design exercise based around the ‘wellbeing workplace of the future’, taking teams outside to explore the natural environment and work collaboratively on designing their utopian workplaces for enhanced wellbeing.
Outcomes
Teams really appreciated this time together, with 84% of participants rating the day as enjoyable or very enjoyable. “The session was fantastic with a broad range of fun activities to engage the group. I liked the variety of group classroom tasks and the outside tasks which mixed the day up nicely. The Telescope presenters were really nice and facilitated well.” With stronger connections and renewed enthusiasm, commitments were made to set up and maintain many of the initiatives discussed in the session that will support staff wellbeing and keep the laughter going.
